Statement on Baptism
While recognizing other churches practice baptism in manners which conform to their understanding of scripture, Crosswinds encourages baptism after one has come to a personal faith in, and desire to follow Jesus.
Scriptural teaching on baptism may be summarized as follows:
- Baptism is an act of obedience to the command of Christ, fulfilled individuals who have subjected themselves to His sovereignty. (Matthew 28:18-20)
- Baptism symbolizes the spiritual cleansing through divine forgiveness and newness of life experienced by a believer, by virtue of their identification with Christ in His death and resurrection.
- Baptism provides an opportunity to profess your faith before the church and to the world.
- As baptism is a symbol of Christ's work in one's life, there is no saving work in the baptism itself. Baptism is an identification and celebration of Jesus' work on our behalf.
